Nematological Society
of Southern Africa
Nematologiese Vereniging van Suidelike Afrika
Member
Society of the IFNS
Peter
Smith encouraged nematologists attending an entomological
congress at Stellenbosch in 1971 to establish a southern
African nematological society. Questionnaires on this issue
were distributed at the congress, resulting in 34 people
interested. The Nematological Society of Southern Africa
was established in 1972 and two newsletters were issued.
In April 1973, the first NSSA Symposium was held with delegates
from Rhodesia (currently Zimbabwe), Swaziland and South
Africa. From there on symposia were held biennially.
The aim of the NSSA is to advance the science of nematology
in southern Africa in both its fundamental and applied aspects.
To serve this purpose the Society shall act as an agency
for the exchange of information, shall hold regular symposia
and shall promote and extend knowledge in all phases of
the subject.
There are currently 148 members, up from 43 in 1973.
